This work is a synthesis of ideas about connections between the self and landscape. It is an expanded format painting, an assemblage of fabricated and found objects. Put together they form the image of a broken ship baking in the end-of-the-world sun. It is symbolic of the link between environmental and personal tragedy, and lost redemption. A space with an absence that is built from remnants of its inhabitant as residue.
This work was partly influenced by The Mosquito Coast and ideas about conformity and systems of authority which have the potential for disaster as well as freedom.
