My work is best described as speculative conceptual abstraction.
With my work I suggest alternative ways of seeing abstract landscapes in painting and sculpture, particularly in relation to climate anxiety.
I have some (ongoing) questions:
How can landscapes in flux be visualised?
What are the ontological aspects of abstract landscapes and imagined spaces?
How do external landscapes intersect with imagination (the internal landscapes of perception, thought, and memory)?
How do internal landscapes (fear, anxiety, loss) become expressed as abstract colour fields?
The connected pattern of making-thinking is part of how I define an internal or abstract landscape. A lot of my work is connected by water and water contamination; a discourse flowing through like streams of thought.
About me
I grew up on the edge of the Cotswolds but also spent much of my later childhood in Norfolk, currently the driest part of the UK. I now live in the Netherlands, a large proportion of which sits below sea level. Both areas are at risk of higher tides and coastal flooding. This uncertainty influences my work as I'm likely standing below sea level and should be underwater.
