What is landscape
if not a multitude of interconnected spaces
thoughts and actions and internal worlds
remnants of someplace
mixed with a haze of past encounters
spaces places and feelings
caught and pulled downstream
to an end
adrift in a lagoon
I grew up on the edge of the Cotswolds, but also spent much of my later childhood in Norfolk, currently the driest part of the UK. I now live in the Netherlands, where being below sea level means a lot of work is done to keep everyone dry. Both areas are at risk of higher tides and coastal flooding. This uncertainty influences my work. Wherever I stand, at least in the area of Amsterdam, I'm likely standing below sea level and should be underwater.
These thoughts sit with me as I make my latest work, which is a kind of speculative painting: what spaces and colours might be seen in the next environment, post-collapse? What kind of landscapes would Mark Rothko or Richard Diebenkorn make today, if they were still around? What does non-figurative painting look like at the juncture of (meta-)abstraction and landscape? And how does the interior environment of my studio affect the outcome?
I don't believe my work answers any of these questions, these are just starting points. Where each work ends up is, by intention, adrift.
